About CILEx Law School
CILEx Law School is a leading distance learning law school with around 4,000 students studying by distance learning at any one time. We are specialists in legal training and our students include those aspiring to be solicitors, chartered legal executives, paralegals, legal support staff, legal secretaries and legal administrators.
We were set up in 1983 to deliver distance learning courses for qualifications awarded by the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives to legal secretaries and legal clerks wishing to gain the qualifications whilst continuing with their work. Although we have expanded our range of qualifications to include law at all levels, we have always remained a specialist distance learning law school. We are wholly owned by the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, and have been delivering legal training for over 35 years.
Many of our students are already employed in the legal environment and are using our training to improve their prospects. They are often supported by their employers and we have a strong relationship with training managers to ensure that training is matched to business needs.
CILEx Law School has an extensive in-house team, largely based at our Kempston office in Bedford.
Our mission is to provide effective, high quality and accessible training to meet the needs of those wishing to gain professional or vocational legal qualifications. We strive for professionalism, innovation, flexibility in course delivery and excellence in customer service. We give you a flavour of how we do that in our ‘Study with us‘ section.
CILEx Law School’s ethos is to provide high-quality training at a reasonable cost to learners or their sponsoring organisation. We have invested heavily to enhance the quality of our programmes and to develop the best training methods to support our students.
As part of the CILEx Group we are committed to promoting equality in matters of race, disability and gender.
As a training provider, we are also committed to developing our own staff.
We offer distance learning courses for all CILEx Level 3 and CILEx Level 6 units, amounting to 40 separate courses which are updated and republished annually. We work closely with law firms, legal disciplinary partnerships and ABSs to provide training for specified business objectives, sometimes working with cohorts of students in the context of an employer’s in-house academy.
As well as our CILEx business, we are also a key provider for the criminal justice sector, developing and delivering bespoke courses for the Crown Prosecution Service, police forces and other prosecutorial agencies. We have been in partnership with De Montfort University for over 20 years in the delivery of vocational progammes for solicitor training.
Our student numbers now also include a growing number of legal apprentices. We deliver apprenticeships for the legal sector including the Paralegal, Chartered Legal Executive and Solicitor programmes, as well as an apprenticeship in business administration.
We have been instrumental in the development of legal apprenticeships, which are particularly relevant since the launch of new apprenticeship standards for the legal sector and the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy.
CILEx Law School’s work as an innovative supplier to the legal sector has been recognised by a number of industry awards.
Our nominations for these awards related to our work in legal apprenticeships and also our innovative delivery of CILEx training to meet the business needs of legal services organisations.
