Choosing the CILEx route after an LLB – Liam Douglas

A careers advisor suggested law to me when I was trying to decide what to do for Sixth Form. It turned out to be good advice, because I found that I really enjoyed it and got an A in my A Level. I went on to study law at Teesside University and achieved a 2.1. Like most law students I thought this would lead me to becoming a solicitor, but gradually I realised that the shortage of training contracts was going to make this unlikely.

I was lucky to get a job as a Conveyancing Executive at Langleys Solicitors and I found out about the CILEx Graduate Fast-track Diploma route. The firm is sponsoring me through the qualification. It is a fantastic option for me because the work I am doing at Langleys will fulfil the qualifying employment element of the Chartered Legal Executive qualification.

It is quite hard work fitting the studies around a busy full-time job, and I am due to become a father soon which will make it more difficult, but completing the GFTD will be worth it because it has opened up opportunities in the future for career progression, and apart from the fees being less than the LPC course, I do not have the worry of having to try get a Training Contract!!!
