Working in an in-house legal department – Jessica Atkinson-Ryan

I had a place at university to begin in 2010, however, due to a change in personal circumstances I decided it was not appropriate for me to go, so I started work in customer service.

I then applied for a job as a Customer Claims Assistant in the legal department of the travel company I was working in, dealing with personal injury complaints from customers.

I heard about the CILEx route to qualifying as a lawyer through my employer who had funded the studies of other members of the department via the CILEx route, and I enrolled on my first courses at the age of 20.

I have completed a home refurbishment and moved house numerous times during my studies so far. Moving home is said to be one of the most stressful things to do in life! I also have a fairly long commute to work, so fitting my studies around this has been the biggest challenge to overcome. However, CILEx is very flexible and you can study at your own pace, choosing to take on as much or little as you can.

My CILEx Level 3 qualifications have enabled me to move into a better job role, where I am gaining valuable experience. I now work in-house for the same travel company although my title is now Customer Litigation Executive, dealing with pre-litigation and litigated claims.

My experience with CILEx Law School has been great – very helpful and approachable, and easily contactable with any concerns. The online resources are also great.

I’m so pleased I have been able to study via the CILEx route. I feel my job prospects are much greater, and by studying alongside work, I am getting the best of both worlds.
