From Law A level to Associate Member of CILEx in less than a year

Jonathan Taylor has achieved Associate Membership of CILEx in less than a year, having passed seven CILEx Level 3 units during that period, including five law units, achieving four distinctions and a merit. Jonathan was taken on as a school leaver by Berrymans Lace Mawer LLP (BLM) and enrolled on his first CILEx courses in February 2012. He was eligible for exemption from three of the ten units that make up the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice due to already having a law A level.

Jonathan studied his CILEx courses by supported distance learning with CILEx Law School (formerly ILEX Tutorial College). The flexible course structure allows enrolment at any time of year. Noel Inge, Managing Director of CILEx Law School said: “This is further proof, if any more were needed, that the CILEx route offers a real alternative to university for bright young people who wish to avoid hefty tuition fees. Jonathan has shown great commitment in achieving the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice in such a short time, studying alongside full-time work.”

Jonathan works as a Trainee Legal Executive in the Children and Education Team in the Leeds office and works on a whole range of defendant personal injury claims ranging from slips and trips to high end abuse claims. The team was formed by Roy Woollard and Deborah Procter in 2010 who decided to take on a school leaver as the team expanded, to train and develop over time as the team progressed.

Chris Coughlin, senior partner in the Leeds office at BLM, said: “The CILEx scheme is great as it enables talented young people to develop a career in the law through an alternative route. Jonathan has excelled since joining BLM; he has shown real aptitude in undertaking a wide range of personal injury claims and is a valuable addition to our team. At BLM we are continuously looking at different options available to ensure we attract, recruit and retain the right people – whether they are school leavers, paralegals already employed by us or graduates that are leaving university to embark on a career in the law. We believe that development is essential to the organic growth of the firm and we are proud that a number of our current partners began their career here.”
