Nineteen legal apprentices have been recruited by international law firm Gowling WLG to follow the Paralegal Apprenticeship programme over a period of two years. The new recruits joined the firm on 25 September 2017 and are participating in an extensive induction course in Birmingham, jointly delivered by Gowling WLG and apprenticeship provider CILEx Law School, before joining their teams in October. The apprentices will be employed in either the London or Birmingham offices and will be placed in a range of practice areas across the firm including Real Estate, Corporate, Commercial Litigation, Construction, Banking and Finance, and Tax and Funds.
Barking and Dagenham Council is set to be the first London council to hire two Solicitor Apprentices into its in-house legal service. The Council will also be recruiting a Paralegal Apprentice. The apprentices will all be recruited for a September start ideally targeting young people in the borough’s schools undertaking A levels in the summer.
International commercial law firm Hill Dickinson is recruiting a further ten legal apprentices to build on the success of its apprenticeship programme. This will be the fifth annual intake of apprentices.

They will all follow the Paralegal Apprenticeship programme over two years and will be placed across a number of teams including real estate, construction, banking & finance and dispute resolution.
CILEx Law School has been contracted by Highways England to deliver a bespoke Property Foundation course for staff working within their Major Projects Directorate. The programme is designed to increase the skills and capability of the property teams by improving their knowledge and understanding of land law, highway law, statutory orders, compulsory purchase, planning and other related policies and procedures including customer service and health and safety.
National law firm Bond Dickinson has won the Newcomer Large Employer of the Year award at the National Apprenticeship Awards.
Over 150 people visited the North East’s first solicitor apprenticeship open day at Muckle LLP offices in January. Around 60 students attended the event, run in collaboration with CILEx Law School and City, University of London.

A group of law firms in the North East of England is leading the way in developing a collaborative approach to employing solicitor apprentices. McDaniel & Co. Solicitors, Muckle LLP, QualitySolicitors Smith Roddam and Sintons Law – are jointly liaising with schools to promote these opportunities and will also work together on the recruitment and assessment process for candidates. Other firms may join the initiative.
